William Baker

Principal Software Engineer
40 years of development and consulting experience

William has lived through the evolution of the industry from the Commodore 64 to the cloud. He's seen computer standards come and go. Flowcharts were still an expected artifact in the early 1990s, and serious coding was mostly done in C though many low-code and no-code solutions drifted in the landscape.

As the World Wide Web took hold, CGI and Perl were the early tools. Microsoft Project ruled the management workflow. C/C++ developers were still in demand. Windows NT with IIS was the expected enterprise solution. Professionals were expected to stick to Oracle and Microsoft. Linux and Apache were treated as only hobbyist tools.

Now, 30 years later, although we have purged the bad habits of flowcharts and comments for every line of code, our current standards of Agile, GIT, and Java are surely superior. Well, yes and no. A little reflection will show that we have replaced many unproductive habits with new ones.
